Actor Michael Sheen is having a GOOD time proper now. On CBS All-Access, Sheen joins the forged of the authorized drama THE GOOD FIGHT as the (figuratively) devilish lawyer Roland Blum; on Amazon, Sheen stars as the (actually) angelic Aziraphale reverse David Tennant within the six-part adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s celestial doomsday comedy GOOD OMENS.

Sheen, initially from Wales, has a wide-ranging career. He made his Broadway debut in the title position of AMADEUS. Onscreen, Sheen has portrayed real-life figures British Prime Minister Tony Blair (in THE DEAL, THE QUEEN, and THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP), sex researcher Invoice Masters in 4 seasons of Showtime’s MASTERS OF SEX, interviewer David Frost in FROST/NIXON, and U.Okay. soccer coach Brian Clough in THE DAMNED UNITED. On the other finish of the spectrum, he’s performed sympathetic werewolf leader Lucian in the UNDERWORLD franchise, evil vampire chief Aro within the TWILIGHT saga, synthetic intelligence characters in TRON: LEGACY and PASSENGERS, and a big number of roles in between.

Throughout Amazon’s Q&A panel for GOOD OMENS, Gaiman, who wrote the teleplays and is likely one of the present’s government producers, explains how he got here to forged Sheen because the angel Aziraphale. “Just talking as the one that forged Michael and talked him into doing it in the first place, one of many issues that had all the time fascinated me about Michael as an individual – as opposed to Michael as an actor – is that Michael as an actor tends to play individuals with sharp, brittle, barely harmful outsides. However figuring out Michael as I have for the last decade, and going, ‘I truly assume you’d be superb as an angel, as any person who is simply gentle and sweet and actually doesn’t have a darkish bone in his physique,’ and getting Michael to try this has been an absolute delight.”

Asked whether he identifies extra with Aziraphale or Roland Blum, Sheen replies, “I’m in all probability an amalgamation of the 2, however on the floor, I’m more like Aziraphale, I feel. And underneath the floor, I am very murky, like Roland. So a bit of each.”

After CBS All-Access has a Q&A panel for Season 3 of THE GOOD FIGHT, creators Michelle King and Robert King’s sequel collection to their award-winning THE GOOD WIFE, Sheen makes time to answer questions about Roland Blum. Though the present season of THE GOOD FIGHT premiered on March 14 and GOOD OMENS debuted Might 31, the latter collection was shot earlier than THE GOOD FIGHT (maybe as a result of post-production that includes scenes of Heaven and Hell could be extra time-consuming than post-production on courtroom sequences).

ASSIGNMENT X: You’ve played all types of people through the years, but because you had just completed enjoying a particularly good angel, did THE GOOD FIGHT’s Roland Blum come alongside at a very good time for you?

MICHAEL SHEEN: Yeah, I feel so. There’s one thing incredibly liberating about enjoying a character like this, who, anything that’s put in entrance of him, he just pushes it over, and he can say no matter he needs to say, and simply says issues to provoke and outrage. And so having played Aziraphale in GOOD OMENS for six months or one thing, yeah, that is like absolutely the different aspect. The pendulum has swung the other means, and I’m loving it.

AX: How did you come to be involved in THE GOOD FIGHT?

SHEEN: That is a type of serendipitous issues for me. I used to be planning on being in the U.Okay., doing something utterly totally different [laughs]and life stuff occurred. It’s that John Lennon thing – “Life is what happens once you’re making different plans” – and that’s very much what this was. I ended up needing to be in New York for a time period, so I assumed, “Nicely, hopefully, I’ll have the ability to get a job right here.” And actually the subsequent day, this got here up. So it was just like the universe saying to me, “Yup. It is advisable to do this.” So I found myself strolling into the courtroom for my first scene on this present, understanding that I needed to play this big, larger than life character. And with an [American] accent, and a voice, I imply, an enormous character, having had very little time. Usually, definitely for the characters I play which are based mostly on actual individuals, I spend large quantities of time doing analysis. I wasn’t capable of do any. It was like, “Bang! Here you go.” And I keep in mind strolling via these doorways that first day, having to type of primarily take over the whole thing. And I used to be terrified. I’m a confident actor, often. When individuals speak concerning the concept of, “Oh, as an actor, you’re all the time frightened that you simply’re going to get came upon,” I’ve all the time pretended that I know what that’s like; I don’t know what that’s like. I do now [laughs].

Because for that complete first week on [THE GOOD FIGHT]I was genuinely convinced that I was going to be fired, that someone was going to return up to me and go, “You realize what? That’s a very good effort, I like your chutzpah, for what you’re making an attempt to do, but finally, this can be a skilled job, and other people have to observe this. It’s simply not going to work. Sorry.” And on the end of the first week, I had a message from the Kings’ assistant, saying, “Robert want to have a phrase with you.” And I used to be like, “That is it. This is where I get informed.” I keep in mind having been on the telephone with him and considering, “Oh, God.” And he stated, “I just needed to say you’re doing an incredible job. We’re really enjoying watching what you’re doing.” And I was completely convinced I used to be going to be packing my luggage. So that was terrifying. After which as soon as I received that first week out of the best way, I was like, “Okay. I’m feeling extra snug now.”

AX: On a demonic scale, how does Roland Blum examine to Crowley, the precise demon played by David Tennant in GOOD OMENS?

SHEEN: [laughs] Oh, Crowley’s only a softie, really. To start with, the temptation was to speak of [Roland] being Mephistophelean, a satan sort of character, but truly, it goes past that. The Satan was born out of the god Pan in a pagan time, so there’s something pagan about him. And I really like that. I’m making an attempt to play with that a bit more, so I’m making an attempt to look a bit more like a forest creature. However he is urge for food, and quite than placing a type of moral judgment on him, or an ethical judgment, he’s something that goes a bit deeper. And I feel that’s why, hopefully, individuals might be interested in him, and be repelled by him on the similar time. As a result of it does go very deep, and into something very primal. That’s the bit I’m loving about enjoying him so much.

AX: What do you assume actually drives Roland?

SHEEN: It’s one thing very human. I kind of made a joke about it, however it’s true – I truly want being him. Since you’re bearing on things that we all have. individuals typically [say to] actors who’re enjoying the dangerous man in a show, or a film, or one thing, “You have to be having a lot fun, everybody loves a very good dangerous guy.” And it’s slightly lazy serious about it like that, however there’s something truthful in that, in that we go round dwelling a partly repressed life so as to all get together with one another [laughs]. That’s type of what civilization is, isn’t it? And then you will have these characters who come alongside, who are primarily parasitic, because they’re going, “So long as everybody else is holding civilization going, I can simply wreck issues.” However there’s one thing incredibly engaging about that for us, because we go round protecting all the things going.

And I feel in the mean time, there are lots of [real-life] disruptors, there are lot of people breaking down those pillars of what everybody else is making an attempt to maintain up, and that’s the scary thing for us. And so to play a personality who is doing that, that makes individuals go, “I wish I might do this. I spend most of my day wanting to try this stuff, but I don’t do it.” So we’re each interested in that and repelled by it. I feel Roland, or individuals like him, characters like him, fulfill two features. On the one hand, he’s the trickster who remakes the world, who comes along and goes, “We have now to throw every thing up in the air, because things are too settled and it’s unfair that society …” All of the stuff that we heard about throughout both the Trump election and the Brexit stuff, about, “Individuals are dwelling in bubbles, and it’s a false sense of, it’s an phantasm of how the world is, and it’s worthwhile to throw all of it up in the air, and remake it.” So he represents the constructive facet of that, but in addition the adverse facet of it, which is about simply eroding things that we all actually need to stay our sort of life and not be consuming each other [laughs]. So he represents both those sides of it.

AX: A part of the mythology of Pan is about testing individuals. Does that apply to Roland’s character in how he offers with others?

SHEEN: Properly, there’s a method of taking a look at characters like the Satan, the thought of tempting and the Garden of Eden, and this goes back to GOOD OMENS as properly, because we truly do this scene in GOOD OMENS [laughs]. But the concept the Devil comes on and goes, “Do you need to know more? Do you need to simply accept the best way things are, or do you need to discover out slightly bit more? And I may also help you do this. Question. Be curious.” So lots of the qualities that we consider as being constructive qualities, and progressive qualities, was sort of contained inside the concept of the Satan and Satan, and that type of stuff. In fact, Devil is a Christian construct based mostly on Pan, something far more pagan, rather more to do with appetite and nature, and the sort of damaging as well as the therapeutic qualities of nature. So I really like that high quality of that character. In truth, within the first scene that Diane [played by Christine Baranski] has with Roland in this season, she learns something from him. Whether he does it on function or not, we don’t know, however he provides her one thing, a bit of knowledge, and she or he picks up on that, and that becomes a serious part of what happens in the season. So he is this character who looks like he’s part of the enemy, however truly, he’s the important thing to perhaps understanding and shifting things alongside. So I really like that. That’s very true, I feel, to that symbolic position of characters like Roland.

AX: With Roland, is what you see what you get, or does he have a secret aspect as properly?

SHEEN: He’s complete surface – what you see is what you get – he is completely that, but he is also totally thriller and darkness, and you will by no means know. I like that concept that you simply type of really feel like, “Oh, he’s simply all surface.” And then you definitely understand, “Oh, no, he’s not all surface.” And it’s very arduous to know. It’s like a type of footage where it’s, “Is it a vase, or is it two individuals kissing?” It retains going forwards and backwards, and you don’t know where you’re with it in that respect.

AX: What would you most like individuals to find out about THE GOOD FIGHT?

SHEEN: Nicely, what I knew about it earlier than I began doing it was that a couple of people who I know, ladies who’re very sensible, I’ve a huge quantity of respect for them, they both stated, “Oh, It’s absolutely my favorite show on TV.” So I knew that folks of discernment have been loving this present, and but it wasn’t getting seen as much because it deserved. So I’m hoping that the more people who get to observe it, the more individuals are going to go, “Oh, it’s absolutely my favorite present.” Because I feel that’s what it deserves. [The following is Sheen engaging in some exaggeration as to what he’s willing to do to promote THE GOOD FIGHT – please do not expect him at your door.] I mean, I’m going to go around to individuals’s houses. I’ll act scenes out for them of their dwelling rooms. That’s what All-Entry means to me. So prepare. I’m going to do the Roland Blum Tour of America.

This interview was carried out during CBS All-Entry’s portion of the Tv Critics Association press tour.
